So yay facts time about Monoyoshi Sadamune and Ichigo Hitofuri~ I appreciate all the recent artworks of Sadistic!Sada or we just call him Sadomune on twitter www so I dug up on their history together. Note: There are 2-3 alternatives to Ichigo’s history but I’m sticking to the most dramatic one.
After talking to a few Japanese friends who actually read and knows the history of these swords, they said that Ichigo’s timeline would go something like this after he was given to Toyotomi Hideyoshi by the Mori Family in 1590.

Spent time with Mikazuki Munechika (The sword of Hideyoshi’s wife)
Hideyoshi dies
Separates with jiji because the wife left the castle (I’ve seen artwork of Jiji just…watching Ichi burn and this is most likely why)
Ichi is said to have been with Namazuo, Honebami, Nikkari and Souza as part of Hideyoshi’s treasures in the castle
Hideyoshi’s son battles the army of Tokugawa and loses
The fire that burns both Namazuo and Ichigo is during the Summer Siege of the Osaka Castle (1615)
The one to have caused the fire and led the siege is said to be Tokugawa Ieyasu
Ieyasu’s fav sword is the lucky wakizashi Monoyoshi Sadamune.
Since Sada belonged to Ieyasu, he was most likely there when Ichi and Namazuo were burnt (Thus, why some of you may have seen ‘Sadomune’ with Namazuo and Ichigo fanarts)
Tokugawa takes (very badly burnt) Ichigo and has him retempered
Tokugawa keeps Ichigo until he was passed to the Imperial Court in 1863
Therefore, since Sada was Ieyasu’s precious lucky sword, Sada sould have remained with the Tokugawa. (P/S: I do not know when Sada was forged unfortunately ;w;) And this speculates that Sadamune was there when Ichigo burned, he was there when Ichigo was retempered, he was there to witness it all. And that’s how the many artworks of Sadamune taunting an injured Ichigo came from because he was there. And he (may have) taunted Ichigo during the 200 years they were together before Ichigo became a Gyobutsu in the Imperial Palace (alongside Hirano Toushiro, Uguisumaru and Tsurumaru Kuninaga ^w^).
Now the LESS DRAMATIC tale is that Ichigo was passed(?) or taken(?) by the tokugawa after hideyoshi died and then he was involved in the Great Fire of Meireki (1657). Only after that he was retempered.
Either way, Monoyoshi Sadamune is speculated to have seen Ichigo burnt + been there after he was retempered. All the more reason for Sadomune to taunt him no? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
By the way, Mikazuki Munechika also ended up with the Tokugawa after his owner died (Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s samurai wife, Nene). So, you could say he was with a retempered Ichigo + Monoyoshi Sadamune for a few hundred years under the same clan (I’m watching you fanfic writers, make something happen please).

And Ichigo’s crest I might add, is a literal depiction of the Tokugawa clan crest (yellow + Monoyoshi Sadamune’s crest) stepping on the Toyotomi clan crest (black crest). These were the two clans that owned him before and after he was retempered. Most disheartening about his crest is that the clan’s crest that burnt him is on top of the crest that treated him like an actual royal sword. His crest will forever remind him that the Tokugawa defeated the Toyotomi who cherished him and that the clan that started the fire that destroyed him will always be with him. Please hug Ichigo Hitofuri.
