What if he was raised with the discipline of the Lan sect instead?

  • During a night hunt, a childless Lan clan elder who is probably too old to marry finds Wei Ying, probably being attacked by dogs. After looking around for the child’s parents and finding nothing, he takes it upon himself to adopt the child.
  • I like to think that lil WWX becomes fast friends with LWJ probably because “this pretty kid is so strange, he never smiles and no one plays with him????????” and the teasing begins at a young age, 6-8 or something?
  • During a diplomatic visit to the Cloud Recesses, Jiang Fengmian finds lil WWX (who was walking with lil LWJ). JFM approaches lil WWX to ask who his daddy is and lil LWJ steps in front of him lowkey as if JFM is a kidnapper
  • JFM and the Lan clan elder who adopted WWX had a talk and JFM gives the elder WWX’s proper name and the proper characters and accepts that WWX is well looked after in the Lan sect and entrusts him to the Lans “and he’s made a new friend too”
  • LWJ is very very protective towards WWX, people assume that he sees WWX as a baby brother, especially given that WWX is gentle/warm and all smiles, kind of like a younger LXC except WWX grins more
  • Some people end up joking that WWX is their shimei instead of shidi

  • LWJ alternates between calling WWX “Wei Ying” and “Ah-Ying” while WWX alternates between “Lan Zhan,” “Zhan-gege,” “Zhan-dada,” (dada = “gege” in Gusu dialect) and the occasional “Lan er-gege”
  • WWX would probably become a second “brother reader” and a possible “third jade”
  • JC would probably have a more stable childhood, mostly because JFM didn’t adopt WWX and Yu Ziyuan had no reasons to be so bitter all the time.
  • JC and Jin Zixuan would probably bond over their mutual interest in dogs. JZX would probably be more accepting of Jiang Yanli by proxy (at first).
  • JC would probably behave more like canon!WWX minus the troublemaking since he still has to preserve the Jiang sect’s reputation.
  • Both JC and JZX bring their dogs to the Cloud Recesses like in the Fear of Dogs audio drama and pass by the icy LWJ and ~serene~ WWX…and then the “serene” WWX freaks out like he’s about to get killed.
  • LWJ would likely be the one to confess, and early too; the confession would probably a silent one, taking off his forehead ribbon and giving it to WWX, and tugging at WWX’s.

I don’t know how this would impact the future plot; would WWX still become the Yiling Patriarch? What of the Xuanwu of Slaughter incident? I know that LWJ would be beyond pissed when Su She hits WWX in the arm, more than in canon, because WWX is somewhat his “baby brother” of sorts. I love canon. Canon is perfect. But still, I can’t help but imagine.

– JZX chokes on his drink (wwx or not, that’s HIS kid), JYL and LXC chuckle at the impudence, JC needs a break from this – then LWJ nods and agrees to almost everyone’s surprise AND IT’S ANOTHER ROUND OF CHAOS and jc is debating the merits of stabbing his eyes with the utensils in his hand then wwx turns to jc and “uncle! looks like i’ll get married before you do” (jc decides that stabbing wwx seems to have MORE merit)

– BUT JL HATES LWJ bc this person is stealing his brother from him and how dare he??? *cue jl and wwx as brothers cutie moments*
